Scream 2
You all know I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pass up plugging Scream 2, right? While Billy and Stu were surprising in the original Scream, did anyone really expect Aunt Jackie from Roseanne to be Billy’s mother (it would be more surprising if you watched Roseanne in the 90s)? In the words of Mickey Altieri: “Didn’t see it coming, did’ya?!”
The Orphanage
What is so great about the twist in The Orphanage is that it essentially changes the genre of the film from horror to family drama. After her son Simón goes missing, Laura begins seeing the ghosts of the children who used to live at the orphanage in the halls while also hearing strange sounds coming from the walls. Turns out, her son got locked in a secret room and broke his neck when he fell down the stairs. The sounds in the walls were Simón hitting the wall to get Laura’s attention and the spirits of the children were trying to help her find him. In the end, Laura takes a bunch of sleeping pills, killing herself, so that she may look after the children forever. It’s such a sweet movie, but it features a twist that you never would have expected!
