As a tender teenager when this was released, just getting started on the journey that has led me here, I thought Saw was pretty ground-breaking. That bit where the antagonist leaps out of the bedroom cupboard is damn frightening! Ruined by sequels and copyists, it’s almost cliché to include it here. Indeed, I definitely groaned when I came across it in preparing this list. I think it once held the record for the most profitable horror franchise of all time – is that still a fact? Love it or loathe it, horror fans owe Saw big time. I don’t think we’d have The Human Centipede if it weren’t for Wan’s 2004 hit. You can decide whether that’s a good thing or not.

When nurse Julia finds herself trapped inside the home of her dementia patient, she begins to suspect things are not what they seem; something demonic is seeping through the cracks of this old home. Trapped and with nowhere to turn, Julia soon finds herself in battle to rid the house of this evil before it is too late.

“This film depicts the most harrowing 90 minutes of our protagonist’s life, and I felt that the most visceral way to really feel this was to do a single-shot film,” O’Brien previously teased. “We are with her every step and misstep she takes – through the unraveling of the mystery to the horror of her discovery. It’s a fun, twisty roller-coaster ride that puts a new spin on exorcisms.”
Bury the Devil is the first installment in a planned trilogy. The prequel, Bury the Devil: Origin, is already in development with O’Brien returning to the helm.
O’Brien produces along with Philip Kalin-Hajdu (The Sacrifice Game) and Benoit Beaulieu (Turbo Kid).
