WORLD OF DEATH EP. 144 – Permanent Press
Welcome World of Death-amphetamine addicts to another installment of your favorite weekly horror series! On tonight’s episode, we have a beautiful stand-alone entry that’s too insanely fun to pass up.
A tried and true horror tradition is to see what happens when we creatively take an inanimate object and turn it evil. From more serious efforts like the killer automobile in Stephen King’s novel Christine and the possessed mirror in Mike Flanagan’s film Oculus, to more tongue-in-cheek fare like the titular nightshade fruit in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and a renegade tire in Rubber, horror revels in turning the mundane into the macabre.
Shaun Swift joins the brood by turning one of the most benign and boring locations into a scene of carnage. In “Permanent Press” a small town sheriff teams up with a devout priest to rid their town of a demon-possessed laundromat drying machine hell-bent on devouring local teens. This pitch-perfect short has all the trappings we’ve come to love from cheeky horror comedies – small town civil servants, horny teens getting their comeuppances, a “prepare for war” montage, ripped off appendages and, of course, wonderful cringe-worthy puns.
The acting and dialogue are serviceable. They delightfully move the story along, but take second fiddle to the real stars of the show – the concept, cinematography and effects. This crew must have had a laundry load of fun making this short and it shows in every frame of this raunchy 80’s throwback of a horror flick.
Shaun Swift and company clearly had a vision and, in my opinion, fired on all cylinders and succeeded. I would love to see what he comes up with given a feature script and a budget.
See you next time, World of Death Diehards!

Anna Faris & Regina Hall Promise ‘Scary Movie’ Will “Offend Everyone;” New Images Revealed
The Wayans are out to cancel the Cancel Culture with Scary Movie, and the cast assures it will do just that.
“They sort of have an across-the-board style,” Anna Faris tells EW. “It’s always been a part of the Wayans Brothers, their electricity. ‘Can we offend you? Will you still love us? Come on, you still love us, don’t you?'”
Regina Hall concurs, promising the “boundary-pushing” sixth installment in the horror parody franchise will “offend everyone.”
EW has shared a batch of behind-the-scenes images from Scary Movie, which hits theaters June 5 via Paramount.
Faris and Hall are joined by fellow franchise favorites Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Jon Abrahams in the legacy sequel.
The ensemble includes Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Kenan Thompson, and Felissa Rose.
Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs from a script by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, original Scary Movie director Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans (Scary Movie 2), and Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House).
The film will slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t final.
Scary Movie launched in 2000, followed by Scary Movie 2 in 2001. The Wayans’ involvement ended there, but the series continued with 2003’s Scary Movie 3, 2006’s Scary Movie 4, and 2013’s Scary Movie 5.
