Just when you thought the Found Footage horror genre had been thoroughly fucked into the dirt, this week’s World of Death offering arrives just in time to finger new life into its bloody, knife wound-laded carcass.
Trust me that will sound slightly less bizarre once you watch “Happy Birthday, Brenda”.
Written and Directed by Rory Douglas Abel (with a writing credit shared by Corey Stephens) “Happy Birthday, Brenda” tells the tale of events that befall the titular Brenda on her birthday. Turns out Brenda is a sadistic serial killer that likes to slice up her victims because…
“It’s the closest I’ll ever come to having a cock.”
Nice! Finally someone gets it. As the story unfolds there’s also allusions to swinging (polyamory not like, swing-sets and shit) and chastity belt devices. At least that’s what I took away from it. Watch it for yourself and let me know, maybe I’m projecting.
An outfit called Feast Effects also handled the FX for this one and they’re pretty fucking alright. Lots of blood, lots of gore, with a little bit of “gee wiz how’d they do that!” thrown in for good measure. Come for the (possible) kink subtext, but stay for some pretty brutal knife play.
Rock over London, rock on Chicago!
