[World of Death] May 2019: “Jax in Love” and “Misguided”

Published

on

Traveling down that lonesome highway is a great getaway from the stressful grind my friends and neighbors. As you set out this season on your own escape from the everyday madness, you may fly or take a cruise, but I suggest you get behind the wheel and take off on the open road. You never know what new fiends you may come across. Some of our best stories come from adventures on the road. Marion Crane discovered a wonderful little motel with just the friendliest staff. Bill Hudley found a great deal of content for his book on roadside attractions, In tonight’s tale, Jax discovers several new friends along her trip.

In Colin Campbell’s “Jax in Love”, we meet up with Jax, a happy if somewhat lonely traveler on the road somewhere in the vastness between the bastions of civilization. Jax is enjoying the trip, singing along with the music on the radio, when out of nowhere – as it so often happens – car trouble enters the scene. With a broken down car and no sign of help nearby, Jax must rely on the kindness of strangers. But, soon it becomes clear that the inhabitants of the interstate are not always friendly. Luckily, after being ignored by one passerby and assaulted by another, Jax finds security in Sunny, a traveler with a disposition as optimistic as the name would imply. Alas, soon the sun will set and you know how the night brings out the darkness. This tale of transit and looking for lost love is a refreshing demonstration of the dangers of driving down rural roads. With a good sense of dread, you start to wonder what will happen and will not be let down by the outcome. While you may initially think you know how this tale turns out, it is the downright delicious dialog that makes this story specifically standout. While the whole cast is well performed, it is the soliloquies by Rakefet Abergel as Jax that elevates this from byway to highway. Keep this tale in mind next time you travel down the turnpike – maybe you too will find love.

Our next tale is all about learning just how daunting the ways of the world can be. We all work to find our way but sometimes the road is easily navigated with the help of an ally or guide. Thankfully, most of us have a plethora of individuals willing to provide guidance. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not. I never said it was good news. That is up to you to determine. Don’t fret too much, leave your worries at the door… after all, what is the worst thing that can happen if you make the wrong choice? Ben Botwick’s “Misguided” explores this very situation. Flo is an aspiring actor, seeking her first big role. As the title suggests, Flo will experience some maligned at worst, negligent as best, guidance. From parents hoping to take part in the process, to an assistant who bestows vital alternate information at the last minute, all advice is not as valid as we might hope it to be. This story will leave you questioning your own motivations and decisions as you watch Flo come to the realization that her guides may not be the most beneficial. I advise you to be careful if you think you know what is coming… you may have been misled.

That is all for today Friends and Neighbors. Remember that everyone you meet here in the World of Death is on the same journey, just at different steps on the path. I am glad to be your guide this day, and any day you need a fiend to go along with you on your trip. Whether you are walking in the forest, or traveling down the road, if you are carrying that heavy load of doubt, despair and drama – rest assured that you are not alone in the darkness.
