Guillermo del Toro Teases Upcoming Horror Projects With Jennifer Kent and Issa Lopez

Yesterday, Guillermo del Toro hosted an event to preview footage from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark which he co-wrote and produced for director Andre Ovredal. While he was speaking with reporters, we had a chance to ask del Toro about some of his other projects.

At Sundance, we exclusively reported that The Babadook director Jennifer Kent had met with del Toro to discuss a secret project. Yesterday del Toro confirmed Kent would helm part of the anthology series he’s developing for Netflix.

“She’s going to do one of the stories that we’re doing for Netflix,” del Toro said.

“She’s adapting a story that is based on a concept that I came up with but she’s writing and directing.”

Tigers Are Not Afraid director Issa Lopez is another up and coming filmmaker who made an impression on del Toro. He’s hoping to produce a movie for her too.

“The one we’re developing with her is a werewolf movie,” del Toro revealed.

Fortunately for Lopez, she’s a little busy so del Toro will happily get in line.

“Issa is very much in demand, God bless, so she has several projects,” he said. “I just read the script. She gave it to me this weekend. I read it. I loved it. Now we’re going keep going. She’s a fantastic new voice in the genre and she’s a terrific director.”

After winning the Oscar for directing his Best Picture winner The Shape of Water, del Toro is also looking for his next film to direct. He’s narrowed it down, del Toro tells us.

“I have two movies that are neck to neck but I haven’t decided,” del Toro said.

The possibilities of projects on del Toro’s plate are well documented. He said of the films he’s deciding between: one is a project we’ve heard of, the other is not. He wouldn’t say which ones though. We’ll find out when he decides.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark opens August 9.
