The new horror movie Brightburn (read my review) takes a lot of its inspiration from superhero movies, with a storyline that warps the familiar origin of Superman and transforms it into a harrowing, ultraviolent tale about the creation of a horrifying, all-powerful slasher villain. But when we think about superhero movies we don’t just think about story tropes, we also think about sequels. Lots and lots of sequels.
Bloody-Disgusting asked director David Yarovesky about the future of the Brightburn franchise, and what form it could take now that this world has been introduced. And he says the answer will be… a surprise.
“One of the great joys I had on [Brightburn] was being so secretive about this movie, until we dropped the trailer,” Yarovesky said.
“And sharing that trailer, the first trailer, is just one of the best days of my life because I’d been working so quietly on this thing and we succeeded at surprising so many people! No one knew what the hell we were working on and we surprised everyone.”
That sense of discovery wasn’t just a marketing gimmick, according to the filmmaker. It’s an important part of the potential franchise.
“And that’s part of the DNA of Brightburn,” he continued. “To me, if we are so lucky as to ever expand the universe of Brightburn, I would like to do it in the same way: that no one would see it coming and then we would drop some really surprising thing on everyone.”
In an entertainment media landscape where every movie is teased and speculated upon for months and even years before its release, the makers of Brightburn did it once. Maybe they really can do it again.
So be on the lookout, because you’ll never know when the next Brightburn will turn up!
