Earlier this year, we reported that usual funnyman Danny McBride (Hot Rod) had joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, the sequel to 2012’s Prometheus. The response was, well…let’s just say that there was a lot of skepticism surrounding this casting decision.
However, as many people noted, Brett and Parker in Alien were charmingly funny but without making it a comedy. They were genuine, they were true to themselves, and they added a little bit of light in an otherwise grim story. And after the loss of Brett, Parker became a totally different person, one that was serious, focused, and obviously in pain.
Additionally, we can’t forget that comedian Paul Reiser was in Aliens and he brought forth no comedy whatsoever. Instead, he was a perfect slimy corporate scumbag that deserved every hateful emotion lobbed his way.
So while McBride’s presence may seem strange, it’s not all that surprising once you think about it. And in a recent interview with HitFix, McBride addressed the concerns that he was in the script as some sort of a joker by saying, “This shit is dark. There is no comic relief in this at all. This is a dark horror movie.”
We’ll know for sure when Alien: Covenant hits theaters on August 4th, 2017.
