Besides having my own mini-marathon all day yesterday, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of James Cameron’s Aliens with some fresh editorials that looked back at the greatest horror/action film ever made.
My personal favorite is Trace’s piece, which declares that Sigourney Weaver was robbed of an Oscar. “At the 1987 Academy Awards, five very talented actresses were up for the Best Actress award. One of them was Sigourney Weaver and no, it wasn’t for Gorillas in the Mist or Working Girl. She would land those nominations at the 1989 Academy Awards. No, in 1987 Sigourney Weaver was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her role as super-heroine and female role-model Ellen Ripley in James Cameron’s sci-fi sequel Aliens.” Click the link for more.
Think you know it all? We also shared 30 fun facts you may not have known about Aliens, which include gems like: “The spear gun Ripley used at the end of Alien is briefly visible in the opening scenes – still stuck at the bottom of the escape pod door where it jammed 57 years earlier.”
Brendan Morrow celebrated in his own way, penning a long form editorial that discussed the sole decision that made Aliens a perfect sequel. Curious as to what he’s referring to? Click the link and find out!
Lastly, Trace shares the shocking true story of how Aliens almost never happened! “After the huge success that was Alien, Brandywine Productions was fully intent on churning out a sequel. Alan Ladd, Jr., the president of 20th Century Fox at the time, fully backed the project (he’d have been a fool not to). Unfortunately, 20th Century Fox was put under new ownership towards the end of 1979 and Ladd left the company. Norman Levy was brought in as the new president and rumor has it that he though a sequel would have been too expensive for the company to produce.” What would happen next takes you into the depths of Hollywood’s development hell.
Go give Aliens a watch today, just make sure it’s the far superior Special Edition.
