Evil Dead (2013)
The newest entry on our list, Fede Alvarez swears up and down that this movie uses no CGI except for some minor touch-ups and it shows! Every gruesome event feels sickeningly real and we’re left watching in horror as needles are pulled out from underneath an eye, as a cheek is cut open to reveal the jaw behind, as a tongue is cut and spliced in two, and more. You can say whatever you want about this movie but it brings the gore and it brings the FX!
Dead Alive
Did you really think I would write this list and leave off Peter Jackson’s gleefully messy zombie flick? Whenever asked what some of the goriest horror movies of all time are, Dead Alive happily trots its way onto that list and plunks itself down amidst a cadre of other films that dare to reach its level.
From the hysterical ear in the custard scene to the baby bursting through a face, Dead Alive joyously broadcasts its FX work. While the lawnmower scene is perhaps the most famous from this film, let’s not forget about everything leading up to it!
