WORLD OF DEATH Ep. 73 – Never To Wake Again / Mastication

Welcome back, WOD Watchers!

Did everyone enjoy their weekend?  I wish I could tell you today’s episode is going to cheer you up and get your week started off on a fun note, but I’d be lying.  Horror wouldn’t be horror without the down notes.  We, as horror lovers, enjoy when the bad guys win.  We enjoy when things end on a downer.  So in a way, we’re making you happy by being a bummer.  You’re welcome.
First up on today’s lineup is a film called Never To Wake Again by director Ruben Rodriguez.  This story gets inside the head of a girl contemplating suicide.  Through narration, she tells us all her possible methods and outcomes with step by step descriptions.  I’m not going to lie to you, this gets pretty morbid and honestly feels a bit like a graphic version of an ad for the Suicide Prevention Hotline.  Except, there’s no one on the other end telling her not to do it.  It’s hard to say there are some cool things about this, as we know suicide is a serious problem that shouldn’t be taken lightly, but kudos to the director for crafting a thought-provoking vignette of some real-life horror.  Sometimes the monsters we fight are inside us the whole time.
Next in line is Tim Wolak’s Mastication.  No, not that thing your Mom caught you doing in your bedroom that one time you left your door unlocked by accident.  MASTICATION…the act of chewing/eating.  We jump into the story as a girl awakens from some kind (most likely) of drug-induced slumber in a bathtub.  As she scans for a way out, she soon realizes she trapped and she’s being watched by someone or some…thing.  Also, at some point in the process of freaking out, she deems it necessary to cover herself with a towel.  BUT I digress.  She encounters the creature who has kept her there and learns what has happened to all her friends as well.  This one boasts a believable performance from the actress and a cool visual effect from the keyhole.  Kudos to the makeup team on this for giving us the mutated Avatar-like creature for a fraction of the Avatar budget.  James Cameron could’ve taken some advice.
Anyway, enjoy your week and we’ll see you sick shits back here on Thursday.
Roll it!

Anna Faris & Regina Hall Promise ‘Scary Movie’ Will “Offend Everyone;” New Images Revealed

The Wayans are out to cancel the Cancel Culture with Scary Movie, and the cast assures it will do just that.

“They sort of have an across-the-board style,” Anna Faris tells EW. “It’s always been a part of the Wayans Brothers, their electricity. ‘Can we offend you? Will you still love us? Come on, you still love us, don’t you?'”

Regina Hall concurs, promising the “boundary-pushing” sixth installment in the horror parody franchise will “offend everyone.”

EW has shared a batch of behind-the-scenes images from Scary Movie, which hits theaters June 5 via Paramount.

Faris and Hall are joined by fellow franchise favorites Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Jon Abrahams in the legacy sequel.

The ensemble includes Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, Kenan Thompson, and Felissa Rose.

Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs from a script by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, original Scary Movie director Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans (Scary Movie 2), and Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House).

The film will slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and everyfinal chapterthat absolutely isn’t final.

Scary Movie launched in 2000, followed by Scary Movie 2 in 2001. The Wayans’ involvement ended there, but the series continued with 2003’s Scary Movie 3, 2006’s Scary Movie 4, and 2013’s Scary Movie 5.
