A24 has been having an INCREDIBLE run of success these last few years, and we’ve just learned that their Hereditary, released earlier this year, is a landmark film in the company’s history. As of today, Hereditary has now pulled in $79,013,965 at the worldwide box office, outgrossing their own Oscar nominated Lady Bird‘s $78,204,531 worldwide total.
Yes, that means Hereditary is, to date, the company’s biggest box office success!
Deadline breaks it down, “The top overseas plays on Hereditary are the UK (Entertainment) at $7.29M, topping comps like Insidious and The Witch; Mexico (Sun) with $3M, besting Get Out, Insidious and Lights Out; Australia (Studiocanal) with $2.7M to eclipse Insidious and The Witch; Spain (DeAPlaneta) at $1.98M; and Korea (Challan) with $1.46M, which is bigger than Insidious. In the Netherlands, the film is Splendid’s biggest release of the year with $1.27M.”
Here in the United States, Hereditary scared up $43,746,600. The film has still yet to be released in a couple markets, with a theatrical release planned for China in September.
So what’s next for A24? Smartly, they’re re-teaming with Hereditary director Ari Aster for the tentatively titled Midsommer, a “Scandinavian folk horror” film that’s reported to be the company’s largest production to date. A24 will both produce and fully finance the film, described by Aster as being a “post apocalyptic breakup movie,” centered on a Pagan cult.
Horror continues to rule the box office. And we couldn’t be happier.
