Hereditary director Ari Aster has recently described his follow-up horror film Midsommar as both a “post apocalyptic breakup movie” and a “Scandinavian folk horror film,” and at the moment we don’t quite know what to expect from it. We’ve thus far only seen a teaser trailer (below), but we can be fairly certain it’s going to mess us up proper come August.

In the meantime, here’s a great quote from Aster about the film. In a chat with Vulture, Aster was asked what movie he’d liken Midsommar to, and he responded as follows:

“It’s a Wizard of Oz for perverts.”

Aster also told the site, “It’s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary is a family tragedy. It’s less overtly a horror movie, but it’s still working in that same space. It’s very macabre. But people shouldn’t go in expecting Hereditary.”

Aster’s new film stars Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and Florence Pugh with Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia and Archie Madekwe.

“Pugh and Reynor will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.”

A24 will release Midsommar in theaters on August 9, 2019.
