If A24 and The Witch director Robert Eggers‘ new film The Lighthouse found itself nominated for acting awards at the Oscars next year, who exactly would be the “leading actor” and who would be the “supporting actor”? It would seem to be a tough call, as Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe share the screen in the film, but A24 has made a decision on that front.
Variety reports this week that A24 will be submitting Pattinson for best *leading* actor consideration, which means that Dafoe will be submit in the supporting actor category.
Dafoe and Pattinson star in The Lighthouse as two lighthouse keepers losing their grip on reality.
Variety notes, “While the film is very much a two-hander, Pattinson has more screen time and his character serves as the audience’s point of view.”
Of course, this doesn’t mean that Pattinson or Dafoe actually will be nominated for Oscars next year, but early reviews suggest that we shouldn’t be surprised if they both are.
The Lighthouse, written by Robert Eggers & Max Eggers and also starring Valeriia Karaman, will be released on October 18, 2019 in NY & LA, with an expansion to follow.
