‘Venom’ Director Ruben Fleischer on What Makes Potential Spider-Man Crossover Interesting

Published

on

While it’s no secret that Sony plans to eventually work Spider-Man into their newly-minted Venom franchise, director Ruben Fleischer has confirmed to Fandom that this is the studio’s big plan, while also explaining why it’s interesting.

“That’s where it’s all going to lead,” he reveals.

In the comics, Venom became one of Spider-Man’s most formidable adversaries, so it only makes sense that fans want/expect to see the two do battle. However, Sony changed Venom’s origins and that’s what Fleischer thinks makes the possibilities so exciting.

“…that’s the exciting thing, because we changed the origin of Venom … in the comics, he evolved from Spider-Man but because of the Marvel-Sony thing, we weren’t able to that. And so the thing I think it’s building towards, and will be exciting to see, is when they actually do confront each other.”

In the comics, Venom is born through the shared hatred of Spider-Man when Peter Parker rejects an alien symbiote’s desire to bond with him, while Parker simultaneously costs Eddie Brock his job. It’s kismat as the symbiote and Brock find each other and assimilate to create the supervillain known as Venom. The two would eventually work together (several times) to stop Carnage, an even more dangerous symbiote that’s been teased for the Venom sequel with the appearance of Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady.

The film offers a new origin for Venom that excludes Spider-man, and this is what Fleischer believes is interesting about the character. While comic fans know the character, they have no idea what will bring Venom and Spider-Man together – although it’s not hard to speculate that it will once again be because of Carnage.
