This Animatronic Venom Was Nearly Used in Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man 3’! [Video]

Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, which is why the third film in his series is one of the most disappointing.

Spider-Man 2 also featured revolutionary game-changing special effects that brought Marvel’s Doc Ock to life and promised to do the same with Venom in Spider-Man 3. Unfortunately, the end product was nothing short of a CG disaster, not to mention the critical miscasting of Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom.

But that wasn’t always the plan, as revealed in the below YouTube video that shares a look at an animatronic Venom created and used in early screen tests.

According to the video, the impressive animatronic was created by Frontline and once was covered by foam latex that had either been removed or rotted over the years.

The animatronic is incredibly detailed and looks way more in line with Todd McFarlane‘s creation than what Raimi ended up putting on the screen in 2007.

Interestingly, the host notes that this animatronic was actually used in early promotion for the film, featured in the very first teaser trailer that initially debuted in front of San Diego Comic-Con attendees back in July 2006.

It’s well known that Raimi wasn’t a fan of Venom and was forced to cram the character into the film by producer Avi Arad, who would eventually shoulder all of the blame.

Would an animatronic Venom have made Spider-Man 3 work better? Unlikely, but at least he would have looked cool.

Sleepy Hollow movie

Paramount is heading to Sleepy Hollow with a brand new feature film take on the classic Headless Horseman tale, with Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) announced to direct the movie back in 2022. But is that project still happening, now two years later?

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know this afternoon that Paramount Pictures has renewed its first-look deal with Lindsey Anderson Beer, and one of the projects on the upcoming slate is the aforementioned Sleepy Hollow movie that was originally announced two years ago.

THR details, “Additional projects on the development slate include… Sleepy Hollow with Anderson Beer attached to write, direct, and produce alongside Todd Garner of Broken Road.”

You can learn more about the slate over on The Hollywood Reporter. It also includes a supernatural thriller titled Here Comes the Dark from the writers of Don’t Worry Darling.

The origin of all things Sleepy Hollow is of course Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” which was first published in 1819. Tim Burton adapted the tale for the big screen in 1999, that film starring Johnny Depp as main character Ichabod Crane.

More recently, the FOX series “Sleepy Hollow” was also based on Washington Irving’s tale of Crane and the Headless Horseman. The series lasted four seasons, cancelled in 2017.
