Sam Raimi Still Wants to Make a Batman Movie Someday

The director of the original Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi returns to the world of Marvel with upcoming superhero-horror movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but Raimi’s own personal superhero interests extend beyond the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking with Empire Online this week, Sam Raimi gently expresses interest in making a Batman movie, a property currently in the hands of The Batman director Matt Reeves.

Raimi tells the site, “I’ve always loved Batman. If I ever saw the Batsignal up in the air, I’d come running.” The comment was said with a laugh, Empire notes, so Raimi’s interest here can really only be considered an amusing “What if?” But it’s an alluring “What if?” all the same, as Raimi’s horror sensibilities would make him a great choice for the darkness of Gotham.

After all, it was Raimi who directed the superhero-horror movie Darkman back in the 1990s, which was essentially Raimi’s own version of characters such as Batman and The Shadow.

And speaking of The Shadow, Raimi also tells Empire, “If I heard that deep, gurgling laugh of The Shadow coming from the darkness, I would also tentatively step outside.”

Interesting to note, 1990’s Darkman was born out of Sam Raimi’s inability to get the rights to Batman or The Shadow, so either project would be something of a full-circle moment.

For now, both are nothing more than dream projects for Raimi. But hey, ya never know.

Filming is underway on The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man for Universal and Blumhouse, which will be howling its way into theaters on January 17, 2025.

Deadline reports that Matilda Firth (Disenchanted) is the latest actor to sign on, joining Christopher Abbott (Poor Things),  Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel), and Sam Jaeger.

The project will mark Whannell’s second monster movie and fourth directing collaboration with Blumhouse Productions (The Invisible Man, Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3).

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott as a man whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator.

Writers include Whannell & Corbett Tuck as well as Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo.

Jason Blum is producing the film. Ryan Gosling, Ken Kao, Bea Sequeira, Mel Turner and Whannell are executive producers. Wolf Man is a Blumhouse and Motel Movies production.

In the wake of the failed Dark Universe, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man has been the only real success story for the Universal Monsters brand, which has been struggling with recent box office flops including the comedic Renfield and period horror movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Giving him the keys to the castle once more seems like a wise idea, to say the least.
