Spring is here and we’re kicking off our May slate with The Ancestral, the disturbing new horror film from renowned director Le-Van Kiet (The Requin, Furie) that’s now streaming on SCREAMBOX!

The Ancestral released theatrically in Vietnam last year. It held the top spot for two consecutive weekends, making it the second consecutive success for the visionary director Kiet. His bold style first caught the eye of the international community after his film Furie became Vietnam’s highest-grossing film of all time; the film went on to become the country’s submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature.

In The Ancestral

“After suffering a family tragedy, a widower moves his two daughters to a centuries-old ancestral home. When both daughters fall prey to sleep paralysis and night terrors, their father seeks the help of a local psychologist. These chilling secrets and frightening visions eventually prove that not everything is what it seems in the old family house.”

The Ancestral is also written by Kiet with contributions from Vo Nguyen Dan. The film stars Lam Thanh My (Hollow), Quang Tuan (Glorious Ashes) & Mai Cát Vi (The Third Wife).

The Ancestral joins SCREAMBOX’s growing library of unique horror content, including The Outwaters, Terrifier 2, Living with Chucky, Cube, 13 Nights of Elvira, Re-Animator, Sleepaway Camp, Hell House LLC, Pennywise: The Story of IT, and Toxic Crusaders.

If you haven’t caught up on our April releases, here are all of the details including the Japanese remake of CubeChild’s Play doc Living With Chucky, and Easter-themed horror Family Dinner!

This month, we also add The Barn 2, Creepypasta, and the ultra-gory Project Wolf Hunting! Here’s the full May line-up.

The new horror movie from New Line Cinema and director Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the upcoming Weapons is assembling an impressive cast, with Josh Brolin (Dune 2) and Julia Garner (The Royal Hotel) recently signing on. Deadline reports today that Alden Ehrenreich (Cocaine Bear) is the latest actor to join the cast of Cregger’s new movie.

The upcoming Weapons is from writer/director Zach Cregger, who will also produce alongside his Barbarian producing team: Roy Lee of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. Vertigo’s Miri Yoon also produces.

The Hollywood Reporter teases, “Plot details for Weapons are being kept holstered but it is described as a multi and inter-related story horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia, the 1999 actor-crammed showcase from filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson.”

Cregger was a founding member and writer for the New York comedy troupe “The Whitest Kids U’Know,” which he started while attending The School of Visual Arts. The award-winning group’s self-titled sketch comedy show ran for five seasons on IFC-TV and Fuse. He was also a series regular on Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series “Guys with Kids” and the TBS hit series “Wrecked,” and was featured in a recurring role on the NBC series “About a Boy.”

Weapons will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.
