Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the beloved 1992 horror-comedy Death Becomes Her is headed to the stage with a brand new musical adaptation, Deadline reports this afternoon.

Deadline writes in their report, “the world premiere of Death Becomes Her will run at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre from April 30 – June 2, 2024.”

Megan Hilty (Wicked, TV’s Smash) stars as the character “Madeline Ashton” alongside Jennifer Simard (Company, Once Upon A One More Time) as “Helen Sharp.”

Death Becomes Her follows actress Madeline Ashton and author Helen Sharp as they experiment with a youth-and-beauty potion that also grants eternal life.”

Check out a teaser trailer for the musical adaptation below.

“The musical comedy features an original score by Noel Carey and Julia Mattison and book by Marco Pennette. Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies) directs and choregraphs. The design team for includes Derek McLane (Sets), Paul Tazewell (Costumes), Justin Townsend (Lights), Peter Hylenski (Sound), and Paul Kieve (Illusions). The Chicago staging is produced by Broadway In Chicago and Universal Theatrical Group,” Deadline reports.

Paul Farrell raved about Death Becomes Her on Bloody Disgusting back in 2022, writing: “With a cast and crew that screamed credibility, technical achievements that went on to inform all manner of Hollywood effects work and some of the most fun 90’s genre entertainment had to offer, Death Becomes Her was the perfect film to pave the way for Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight. It may not be an anthology, but it flows with one’s wicked flavor, reveling in the extremes of character and situation such a story tends to employ.

“It’s a movie about immortality, the desire to cling to that impossible feeling of in-the-moment youth that only has value because of how fleeting it is. Of course, Death Becomes Her has both the luxury and the curse of that which afflicts its protagonists, but unlike the disparate pieces of its undead heroines, its legacy is not trapped in decay. Rather, given its anthology horror roots, its particular brand of immortality will remain eternally vital and ever relevant, a comforting world of strange exaggeration that will always be worth returning to.”

Goldie Hawn, Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis, and Isabella Rossellini starred in the 1992 movie.
