Scream 8 hasn’t been given the green light, but it seems inevitable given the smash hit success of Scream 7. The seventh installment in the 30-years-long slasher saga has already scared up $150 million at the box office, likely on its way to becoming the highest grossing installment in the entire franchise. So yeah, it’s very likely that Scream 8 isn’t going to be far behind.

But will Kevin Williamson be back to direct? Williamson of course wrote the original movie and stepped into the director’s chair for the first time in the franchise with Scream 7, but he reveals in a new chat with Hello Sidney that he’s not likely to play the same role for Scream 8.

I think the next Scream I’ll probably step back,” Williamson tells the fan site. “I want to direct another film that I have written. That is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. Right now I’m working on a couple TV shows. Maybe I’ll direct one of those. Who knows.”

Williamson says later in the interview, “I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins. And I’m excited to see what other storytellers come up with.”

“I’m hopeful there will be a [Scream 8],” he notes.

One of those television projects that Kevin Williamson is currently working on is a Universal Monsters series, which he describes as “an adult Vampire Diaries” – a series he co-created.

Williamson teases, “It’s based in the Universal monster land. I get to play with some of those characters like Dracula and Frankenstein and the Wolf Man and have fun there.”
