That’s a line from the upcoming slasher movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma from visionary filmmaker Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow), coming to theaters from MUBI on August 7, 2026. The film stars Hannah Einbinder as a young filmmaker hired to reboot the in-universe Camp Miasma slasher franchise, which sends her on a journey to meet up with the actress who played the original slasher classic’s final girl (Gillian Anderson).
From there, “the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.”
The official plot description for Teenage Sex and Death describes the Camp Miasma franchise as one that’s suffered from “years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom,” and it’s pretty clear that Schoenbrun is drawing inspiration from the real-life Friday the 13th franchise.
In fact, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma was described by the filmmaker as “Portrait of a Lady on Fire set in a Friday the 13th sequel,” an intriguing hook if there ever was one.
So what’s the story with the fictional in-universe Camp Miasma franchise? The trailer for Teenage Sex and Death gives us a few glimpses of things like movie reviews and stacks of VHS boxes that paint a pretty clear picture of the Friday the 13th-inspired movie franchise.
The Camp Miasma saga centers on a masked killer known as “Little Death,” for starters, and much like the real Friday the 13th franchise, it spawned a video game back in the 1980s.

It’s hard to make out the titles for the eleventh and thirteenth installments in the franchise based only on the trailer screen-grabs at our disposal at the moment, so this will have to do for now. But it’s crystal clear based on these titles that the Camp Miasma franchise is indeed a loving Friday the 13th homage from Schoenbrun, with Little Death following in Jason’s footsteps and heading to both Manhattan and outer space. The ninth installment brings a Christmas theme to the franchise, however, something Friday the 13th never got around to!
As for Medieval Miasma, well, that seems to be more inspired by Army of Darkness than anything else. And then there’s Little Death vs. Sleep Man, an homage to Freddy vs. Jason!
With fourteen total installments, the Camp Miasma franchise actually ran even longer than the Friday the 13th franchise did in our real world, and the critical reception tanked somewhere around the time of Camp Miasma Part VII: Psychic Warriors. That film actually won the Golden Razzie for WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR in the year it was released. YIKES!
Who directed the original Camp Miasma movie that started it all, you ask? That’d be Ray Blanchard! The film’s tagline? “They drowned him. They had to. But he’s not done.”
