It hasn’t yet been officially announced, but we can be pretty damn certain that a sequel to Backrooms is next up for A24 and director Kane Parsons. After all, a horror movie doesn’t open to $100+ million and NOT get a sequel. It’s a world Parsons has been playing in for the last several years, and it sounds like the gears are already starting to turn for Backrooms 2.
Deadline reports, “Sources tell us that Parsons is looking for a screenwriting collaborator to work on the sequel with. That’s the state that the Backrooms sequel is in right now.”
“Parsons’ contract for more Backrooms resides with A24, we’re told,” Deadline goes on to report this week. “Again, it’s super early, so no star attachments or green lights as of this time.”
Last month, prior to the release of Backrooms in theaters, Kane Parsons himself had made it pretty clear that he’s not yet done exploring the liminal horrors of the Backrooms.
Kane Parsons explained in a chat with Screen Rant, “I think there’s a number of things I’m looking at right now. Backrooms, I would have a very hard time saying it’s done. I guess that’s what I can say, but I expect to be seeing a little bit more in the not-so-distant future.”
The 20-year-old filmmaker’s Backrooms very much leaves the door open for sequels, with the tease that portals into the Backrooms are opening up all over the place. We’d be surprised if an official Backrooms 2 announcement doesn’t come along within the next couple months.
