I’m of the opinion that each Insidious film brought something special to the table, and Jacob Chase’s sequel is no exception. Insidious: Out of the Further may have finally allowed the Lambert family some time off from dealing with paranormal activity, but it also makes a point of expanding the franchise’s mythology instead of settling for yet another generic ghost story.
Now that the movie has been out for a while, I think it’s safe to say that fans are already aware of how the sequel expands its narrative scope by introducing a plethora of new and terrifying demonic threats while also bringing back some of our favorite villains from previous entries.
What you might not be aware of is how the effects company Odd Studios, which previously worked on movies like Evil Dead Rise and The Invisible Man, was behind the painstaking process of bringing these ghosts and ghouls to life, new and old alike.
The Australia-based company has actually been posting snippets of their creative process onto their social media accounts, and the results are appropriately disturbing!
From close-up photographs of disgusting faux dentistry to fully realized practical demons that only show up in the flick for a split-second, these behind-the-scenes snapshots are sure to make fans appreciate the hard work that goes into simulating an undead uprising.
However, some of these images are more interesting than others, and one of the most intriguing posts happens to be a photograph of a golden-black creature that looks eerily similar to the franchise’s iconic Lipstick-Face Demon, who is also featured in the film (once again played by series composer Joseph Bishara). Odd Studio notes that they took the Lipstick-Face Demon’s design back to the original Insidious film.
This new entity only appears in Out of the Further during a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment towards the end, but I like the implication that there’s a whole “family” of demonic creatures hungry for living children.
Either way, it appears that a lot of work went into making these hauntings feel so (ironically) lifelike, and it’s always fun to shine a light on the less-appreciated professionals responsible for making our favorite scary movie moments so believable.
