Zach Cregger has struck gold once again at the box office with his third horror movie, and we’re of course talking about Resident Evil. We already told you over the weekend that Cregger’s fresh take on the classic video game franchise scared up an incredible $60 million in its debut at the domestic box office, but worldwide the story is even more impressive.
Resident Evil has already passed $100 million at the worldwide box office!
Cregger’s new movie topped the U.S. box office charts over the weekend with the aforementioned $60 million haul, while the worldwide total after just one weekend is $108.3 million.
What’s particularly noteworthy here is that it was just five years ago that Sony had previously attempted to reboot the Resident Evil film franchise with director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But that film only opened to $5.3 million in the early days of the pandemic, going on to scare up just $41.9 million at the worldwide box office.
The production budget for Cregger’s Resident Evil movie was a reported $75 million, quite a bit higher than Welcome to Raccoon City‘s reported $25 million, but the gamble is paying off.
The highest grossing installment in this film franchise is 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and its $312.2 million global haul, a record Cregger’s film is likely to smash in the coming weeks.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil currently has a 95% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best reviewed video game movie of all time on the platform. You can read our review here.
