Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil was a massive hit in its debut weekend in movie theaters, and the movie’s run at the box office is only getting more and more impressive by the day.
After debuting with $60 million at the domestic box office, Cregger’s Resident Evil has now passed $100 million in the United States, scaring up $103.4 million in U.S. theaters to date.
This makes Cregger’s Resident Evil the very first movie in the Resident Evil film franchise to hit that $100 million domestic milestone, with Resident Evil: Afterlife‘s $60.1 million at the U.S. box office back in 2010 representing the franchise’s domestic high up to this point in time.
Worldwide, Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is now mere days away from passing $200 million. At the time of this article being written, the film’s worldwide total is sitting at $196.4 million.
The highest grossing installment in this film franchise is still 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and its $312.2 million global haul, but Zach Cregger’s movie is coming for that record.
What’s particularly noteworthy here is that it was just five years ago that Sony had previously attempted to reboot the Resident Evil film franchise with director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But that film only opened to $5.3 million in the early days of the pandemic, going on to scare up just $41.9 million at the worldwide box office.
That means in just two weeks, the new Resident Evil movie has already more than QUARUPLED the total worldwide haul of the previous installment in the Resident Evil franchise.
The production budget for Cregger’s Resident Evil movie was a reported $75 million, quite a bit higher than Welcome to Raccoon City‘s reported $25 million, but the gamble is paying off.
