From Nemesis to Lady Dimitrescu, the Resident Evil games are notorious for enhancing the standard survival horror experience by including unkillable stalker enemies that pursue you throughout the campaign.
While filmmaker Zach Cregger made it quite clear that he wasn’t going to include iconic stalkers like Mr. X and other exaggerated monsters in his 2026 film adaptation, that didn’t stop him from paying homage to this terrifying tradition by coming up with his own take on a relentless pursuer enemy.
Referred to as “The Human Tumbleweed” by Cregger (though other crewmembers also called the creature “The Merged Monster”), this rat king-like amalgam of zombified corpses ended up becoming one of the most memorable parts of the movie as it hunted down Austin Abrams’ Bryan like an ironic reminder of the character’s fear of committing to a family unit.
However, horror fans might not be aware that this pulsating mass of body horror was originally brought to life by a professional group of dancers before being enhanced with CGI imagery courtesy of New Zealand’s Wētā FX.
In behind-the-scenes footage shared by stunt coordinator Jakub Hudlický and the Czech studio Movement Productions, we can see the talented group of performers rehearsing a chase scene while strapped together via a harness, with their uncanny movements feeling incredibly unsettling even without the addition of zombified makeup.
These very same dancers also appear in the film as some of the nurse/doctor zombies that inhabit Raccoon City General Hospital, though The Human Tumbleweed was obviously their greatest challenge.
Naturally, much of this performance didn’t actually make it onto the big screen due to both safety and practical concerns, but hats off to Cregger for attempting to insert old-school effects even in the most outlandish elements of his video game adaptation.
