Mike Flanagan Wants to Direct a ‘JAWS’ Movie

Mike Flanagan has spent much of his career adapting and playing with the work of other creators, from Shirley Jackson to Stephen King, and Christopher Pike to Edgar Allan Poe. During an Ask-Me-Anything session over on Reddit this week, in promotion of Flanagan’s latest Stephen King project “Carrie,” the modern horror master revealed that he’d love to work with a certain killer shark.

Flanagan explains in response to a fan question, “It’s so funny to me because I spent a lot of my career thinking I wouldn’t do franchises or sequels, and – whoops – but I really love getting to play in a world I know and respect and adore, and put my own spin on it.”

“Honestly, I wish to hell I could make a JAWS movie,” he admits.

“Another example where no one will EVER get close to the original, but there is a ton of room for improvement on the sequels,” Flanagan continues, making reference to The Exorcist franchise that he’s putting his stamp on next year. Flanagan of course directed brand new movie The Exorcist: Martyrs, the latest installment in a long-running (and once prestigious) horror saga.

Much like JAWS, The Exorcist sequels became a case of diminishing returns.

But JAWS isn’t the only Steven Spielberg movie Flanagan would like to take a crack at…

Flanagan continues in his response to the same question on Reddit, “A JURASSIC movie could be a blast too, I’d want to go really scary with it. A true dinosaur horror film would be a blast.”

While the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise is still quite active, with a new movie currently in the works and on the hunt for a director (hmmm…), we haven’t seen or heard from the JAWS franchise since the maligned sequel Jaws 4: The Revenge way back in 1987. It’s likely that the franchise will SOMEDAY return to the screen, but for now the killer shark remains asleep.

Would you like to see Mike Flanagan wake Bruce back up for a new JAWS movie?
