The Italian doom metal band Novembre were a big part of my early and mid 2000’s. Their albums Novembrine Waltz and The Blue were constantly on repeat, their blend of melancholic melodies and progressive passages something that I found deeply fascinating and appealing.
As I mentioned above, The Blue was an album that I loved listening to. Alas, it would be the last album from the band for a long time. But now, nearly a decade later, the band is ready to release their seventh studio album Ursa via Peaceville Records and we’re beyond excited to bring you the exclusive premiere of the album’s ninth track “Bremen”.
Frontman Carmelo Orlando tells Bloody-Disgusting:
“Bremen” is probably the most “death metal” of all the songs on our new album, ‘Ursa’. It starts with an early Maiden-ian arpeggio and then it attacks with a crushing riff which takes good part of the song. There’s plenty of vocal harmonies. Fifths mainly, so medieval! Lyrically I took inspiration from the novel “Town Musicians of Bremen” by the Brothers Grimm, a bedtime story whose morals are about exploitation of our fellow man.
The track, which you can hear above, has all the earmarks of Novembre that fans have been missing for so many years. It’s heavy and fierce yet there is a gentle, almost serene beauty within the ferocious chaos.
Ursa was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö (Bloodbath, Opeth) and features a guest appearance from Katatonia’s Anders Nyström on the track “Annoluce”.
