We’ve teamed up with “aggrotech” group Combichrist to bring you the premiere of their new video for “My Life, My Rules”, which was directed by Jason Alacrity.
The NSFW video – due to nudity and violence – shows mainman Andy LaPlegua wake up in the middle of a pile of dead bodies. He manages to clothe himself and then goes to perform in a local venue. But when the bridge comes along, the video takes a rather sacrificial turn and the blood flows once again…
“My Life, My Rules” comes from the band’s latest album This is Where Death Begins. You can purchase the album via Amazon.
Director Jason Alacrity explains:
This story begins when I got a call from Andy (LaPlegua). He said to me “I want to crawl out of a pile of dead bodies covered in blood. I’ll then find clothes somewhere and get dressed. Blood will seep through a white shirt, and then the band will show up and we’ll head off and do a performance at a dive bar.” My response was “Well, that sounds wicked. Let’s do it.”
It was then my job to make sense of that from a narrative point of view. I was really excited to work with the band again after the “Maggots” video, and excited to work in black and white this time. I grew up being heavily inspired by the classic Universal monster movies and silent era films like ‘HAXAN: Witchcraft through the Ages’.
I feel the opening scene in the woods and the fire dancing shots during the ritual are reflective of this. The setting of the murder ritual came from the song title “My Life My Rules”. Rules are customs, disciplines and often times rituals. And shooting in the rural south, the idea of the snake handlers and faith healers seemed to make sense. Some backwoods weirdos creating their own “Frankenstein’s monster” of religions.
This was an incredibly fun video to shoot. We made it with the help of a lot of great people in the Marietta, Georgia area, most of whom were friends of the band, donating their time and locations. Everyone had a lot of fun, and I think that comes through in the video. Even despite its dark subject matter.
