Review: ‘The Bounce’ #2

Published

on

Sex is about the only thing missing in “The Bounce” #2. There’s drugs, death, shadowy power brokers and even some cross-dressing for good measure. Oh yeah, and there’s some drug-powered superheroes too in case you were wondering.

WRITTEN BY: Joe Casey
ART BY: David Messina
PUBLISHER: Image Comics
PRICE: $2.99
RELEASE: June 26th, 2013

Chapter two in Joe Casey and David Messina’s grand experiment into drugs and comics brings readers in deeper, almost like holding it in a little longer (so I’ve been told). The uber-trance state is populated with all shapes and sizes of superheroes. With one exception being Zander, Jasper “The Bounce” Jenkins’ long lost drug buddy. He’s the only victim in druggie super city and no one knows why. A nice mystery to solve later.

Readers are shown beautifully by David Messina’s creations and clever panelling how The Bounce came to be. I especially liked the page with Jasper strapped in and all the horrors going on around him. It’s an intriguing premise on creating super powered people. Governments and money made pot heads something more…but why?

I think another theme may be addictions. Different kinds keep popping up all over this issue: drugs, both recreational and prescribed, drinks, power, adrenaline, escapism, and even high heels. Everyone is addicted to something, right? Be it trash TV, comics, shopping, we all have our vices. The Bounce #2 shows us how good and bad those habitual addictions can be with great creativity. I hope the next issue expands our perceptions of this reality further.

Score: 4/5 Skulls
