If “Prison Sex” is Tool’s 2nd most terrifying video, this is easily (by leaps and bounds) the band’s most terrifying visual release. This video, which still inspires nightmares, tackles loneliness, despair, and madness in haunting, surreal visuals. It’s also the video with the iconic “meat pipe”, which is far more disgusting and unsettling than the name suggests.
This is the only other video on this list that is not directed by Jones, who provided character model designs for the video. Instead it was directed by Fred Stuhr, who tragically passed away in 1997.
You probably thought “Sober” was going to be number one, didn’t you? Well, I must admit that it was a close call but I’ve got to hand it to “Stinkfist” for having more for me in the long run. Something about this video seems almost…romantic. While it’s terrifying, filthy, grimy, and truly bizarre, it has elements of care and love. The way the characters gingerly engage with their surroundings, caressing rather than grabbing, suggest the care that they have for each other as well as their environment. Whenever something negative happens to one, the others react with shock and concern.
Then there is the wonderful use of color. With just over a minute left, the dusty blues suddenly change into the color palette that was used heavily in the “Prison Sex” and “Sober” videos, connecting the path of the past into the present. Overall, and this is just my opinion, it’s the most interesting and exciting video that the band has released.
