Try To Scare The Pants Off Your Friends In ‘Spectre’

Remember when half-baked multiplayer modes were tacked on to great horror games in a ridiculous effort to sell more copies of the game? Condemned 2, Dead Space 2, Resident Evil 5 — the list is long and more than a little frustrating. Now a few creative indie developers are finding clever ways to weave multiplayer into their horror games with a purpose.

Spectre is one of those games, and after seeing it in action, it has my full attention. More after the jump.

Spectre reminds me a lot of the similarly themed indie horror game Damned, in that both games aim to make competitive multiplayer the main feature, rather than an afterthought.

According to its Kickstarter, Spectre brings asynchronous multiplayer challenges to virtual reality and allows players to assume the role of either the seekers or the Spectre. Up to four players explore perilous environments and together feel the terror of the being hunted. As a Seeker, your headlight is your weapon and your salvation in darkness. Your headlight is capable of emitting limited bursts of bright light which can incapacitate pursuing Spectres. As a Spectre, your goal is to pursue and drain the life from the Seekers. Spectres can lay traps, create illusions, make distant sounds, disorient Seekers, and transport themselves.”

The game is also being built with the Oculus Rift and Virtuix Omni in mind.

If scaring your friends (or assorted strangers) sounds like your idea of a good time, you can support Spectre on Kickstarter, where it’s crowd-funding campaign is just under $4,000 shy of its modest $15,000 goal, and you can also follow it on Steam Greenlight.
