It’s clear that Hideo Kojima is an intelligent guy, but even smart guys are capable of making mistakes. Kojima’s mistake was underestimating the voracity with which the Internet picks apart every bit of information it’s given, looking for its tasty bits — or, anything that has a chance of making the front page of Reddit. This is exactly what happened with his clever P.T. demo, which turned out to be a creative reveal for Silent Hills.
During a Metal Gear Solid V press conference held earlier today, Kojima revealed he thought the teaser would go unseen for about a week. This is the reason why he made the final puzzle — which has you wait in a dark hallway for something to happen — so difficult. He even had the quality of the demo lowered so it would look more like an independent production.
Despite its early unveiling, Kojima still considers the reveal a success.
You were also probably wondering why the game is called Silent Hills. Kojima touched on that too, saying it stands for how terrifying the game will be. “Originally we were thinking a game that would make you pee your pants,” Kojima said on Konami’s Twitch channel. “We are aiming for a game that will make you s**t your pants.” Bring it.
As for 7780s, the faux studio behind the P.T. demo? Apparently, the name came from Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture, which is 7,780 square kilometers. One translation for Shizuoka is Silent Hill.
I suddenly have an urge to visit Shizuoka.
If you haven’t played the P.T. demo, you can check it out now on the PlayStation store. It’s incredibly twisted and manages to be cram more scares and atmosphere into roughly 60 minutes than many horror games have in 10-15 hours. If you’d rather get the prize without doing any work, you can watch the Silent Hills teaser below.
