Alone in the Dark – The Derceto Mansion

Resident Evil may have been the game to make survival horror mainstream, but all that success is at least partly owed to Alone in the Dark, which served as the inspiration for Capcom’s survival horror classic. I say partly, because we mustn’t forget about Sweet Home, the 1989 horror game that’s widely considered to be the real forerunner to Capcom’s horror franchise. Alone in the Dark broke some serious ground when it released back in 1992 — it was the first survival horror game to use 3D — but its setting is what most folks remember about it today.
The Derceto mansion and the horrors contained within its creepy, abandoned halls was the first to give us nightmares, years before we’d venture deep into the Arklay forest to the Spencer estate nestled within.
