Chapel of Bones, Portugal
I’m assuming irrational fear hasn’t yet made its way to some countries, because if it had, I feel like humanity wouldn’t be making churches out of human remains and populating others with ghosts.
If the subtlety of its name eluded you, the Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones, proves there’s room on this planet for at least two bone churches. An estimated 5,000 monks are currently spending their afterlife in this macabre chapel, which can be found near the Church of St. Francis in Évora, Portugal.
I may have come up with a theory that explains why (at least) two bone churches exist in the world, as opposed to zero. I like to think that the people who run these institutions sought out an interior designer, who took their request for an ivory palette literally.
By the time they realized what the troubled interior designer had done, the renovation was too far along to be stopped.
