We recognize that there are plenty of incredible comics competing for your cash, but there can be only one HORROR COMIC OF THE WEEK. This week, the honored editor’s choice designation belongs to incredibly powerful and gut-wrenching “Pisces” #1 from Image Comics.
This one comes to you via the creative team of Kurtis J Wiebe (Rat Queens) and Johnnie Christmas (Sheltered) but it’s far from what you’d expect from the pair. There are no swords and sorcery here, and instead you get the harrowing look at the life of a recovering Vietnam vet. Through a penetrating and surreal look at loss and the strange currentness of life that we can sometimes find ourselves floating in.
The issue is an uncompromising return to horror for Wiebe who got his start in the genre with Green Wake. You can expect the bleak darkness of that book to return, but this time he’s assisted by Johnnie Christmas’ incredible ability to bend reality to his will. From the moment you open page one, you’ll find a challenging story rooted in deftly plotted moments of horror. The whole thing reads like silk, but will rub against your being like a cheese grater.
PISCES introduces readers to former fighter pilot Dillon Carpenter, who found everything he wanted when he returned from the Vietnam War. A loving partner, a dream career training with NASA to travel through space, and soon, he will learn, a prime candidate for a secret mission, one that will forever change the world: First Contact.
But as Dillon prepares, his war trauma returns and he’s haunted by dark visions of his future. There is but one constant: the voice whispering from the stars.
“Pisces” #1 hits finer comic shops everywhere this Wednesday 04/29/15.
