The Evil Within: The Assignment & The Consequence
I loved the hell out of Resident Evil Revelations 2, enough so that I had this spot reserved for the episodic series until the very last second. The problem is I think it needs more time. It improved on the first Revelations in some very real ways, and I’m excited to see where it’s headed, but it still felt like a lateral move when compared to its predecessor.
I can’t say the same for The Assignment and The Consequence — the two-part story DLC for Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within. These aren’t standalone expansions so they’re technically not their own games, but they did achieve many of the things I usually look for in a traditional sequel.
By stripping out the distractions and excess that’s become a staple of the horror genre since the rise of action horror games like Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space, we were left with a more streamlined and less artillery-focused survival horror experience that was, in some ways, superior to the base game. And scarier, too.
