Picking a scant five horror games out of a year’s worth of releases is like being handed a bag of your favorite chips, of which you can only take five damn chips. There’s no satisfaction to be found in a paltry five chips, only salty sadness.

That might only make sense if you’re hungry enough to follow half-baked (ha!) chip metaphors.

Forget it. I’m itching to get my Top 5 on right now, and even a full Jonathan Barkan’s — that’s 1 1/4 Jonny B’s if you’re on the Metric system — worth of Pringles wouldn’t stop me now. So when you feel like you’re ready to get started, just say the secret phrase I whispered in your ear while you were sleeping and we’ll begin.

Dying Light

The success of Dead Island gave series creator Techland everything they needed to realize their dream of building the ultimate post-apocalyptic sandbox game.

Dying Light took everything that worked in the original Dead Island and combined it with a far more interesting world that encourages players to murder ghouls with the grace of a seasoned freerunner. It was worth the effort as Dying Light was hugely successful both critically and commercially.

Not content to rest on their laurels, Techland has given the game an incredible level of support since it released nearly a year ago through a steady stream of patches and new content. There’s considerably more to look forward to in 2016 when The Following releases in February.
