Red Thread’s first-person psychological horror game Draugen has kept a worryingly low profile since it was first unveiled more than two years ago. I’d like to say that it’s just been quiet, but the truth of it is I simply haven’t been following it as closely as it deserves. Let’s remedy that.
Draugen is an exploration-focused horror game set in the 1920’s “amongst the deep fjords and towering mountains of Norway’s awe-inspiring west coast,” with an unnerving tale woven from the fabric of Scandinavian folklore and Norse legends. It follows Edward Harden, an American nature photographer, botanist and entomologist, who travels to a secluded fishing village that appears to have gone the way of the Roanoke colony.
With no guns, no ghouls — hopefully — and minimal gore, it’ll find good company among Frictional’s narrative-driven games, including SOMA and the Amnesia series.
In October, Draugen went into full production after receiving a $150,000 grant from the Norwegian Film Institute. Red Thread Games is looking to Kickstarter to sustain that momentum into 2016, with a crowdfunding campaign that’s expected to go live “very soon.”
I’ll be keeping a closer eye on this from here on out, so stay tuned for more details.
