Will 2017 be an excellent year for another exorcism?
We spread our love for Fox’s “The Exorcist” across several articles last year and the reason for that was simple: we wanted to make sure you were watching. The incredible debut season of the series, which surprisingly tied into the film franchise in satisfying fashion, was well-reviewed by pretty much everyone who watched. The problem? Well, not enough people watched.
Due to low ratings, the future of “The Exorcist” is very uncertain at this time, and last we heard, Fox won’t be making their final decision until May. At this point, it seems there’s a real good chance the show will not return to the network, but creator Jeremy Slater still remains hopeful.
On Twitter last night, a fan of the show expressed her sadness about “The Exorcist” not being renewed by Fox, and Slater quickly clarified that this was false information. Said Slater:
We haven’t been canceled. I’ve been meeting with the studio & network, pitching my ideas for S2. I’m still optimistic about our chances.
If “The Exorcist” does end up getting renewed, we will be meeting a whole new family in Season 2. Slater gave us the exclusive first details on the planned season back in December:
A potential season two would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession. That doesn’t mean we’ll never see any of the Rances again, but I think the fans would feel disappointed and cheated if we simply brought Captain Howdy back for round three. The Rances have escaped this legacy of terror–for the time being, anyway–and it seems cruel to immediately drag them back for ten more episodes of suffering. Our challenge now is to create a new family that you care about just as much as the Rances, and to find ways to make their story feel just as compelling and unique as what came before.
For now, we can only wait for Fox to make a decision.
