[Horror Queers Podcast] Exploring Life and Death in Cult Zombie Comedy ‘Cemetery Man’

Published

Cemetery Man

Brains! Melons! Rupert Everett! Oh My!

The last few weeks on the Horror Queers Podcast we’ve questioned the sheer ineptitude of slasher musical Stage Fright, explored the sibling relationship in Mike Flanagan’s “haunted mirror” film, Oculus, and heralded the thoroughly underrated slasher sequel, Psycho 2 with Dead for Filth‘s Michael Varrati.

In the newest episode, Trace challenges his self-professed dislike of Italian horror to check out Michele Soavi’s Cemetery Man, the dubbed cult zom-com starring publicly ‘out’ leading man Rupert Everett. We deconstruct the delightfully kooky comedy, the film’s obsession with existential philosophy and its increasingly bizarre last act. You might even hear Trace start to change his mind about the film over the course of the hour!

Episode 17 – Cemetery Man (1994)

Joe and Trace head abroad to Italy to walk Rupert Everett through his existential crisis in Michele Soavi’s bizarro 1994 (or is it 1996?) zombie horror comedy. While both boys struggle with the bad dubbing, Joe is more appreciative of the film’s mix of dry wit, philosophy and art history references than Trace, who reluctantly becomes more appreciative of the comedy as the episode progresses.

Along the way, they discuss queer trailblazer Rupert Everett’s fall from leading man status, the film’s comic origins and reference Brandon Routh A LOT. Finally, the sexist nature of the film’s online reviews prompts Trace to make a listener request that should turn Twitter into an R-rated raunchfest for the next week.

Cross out Cemetery Man!

Coming up Wednesday: we brave the bees, the burning effigy and the bear suit to revisit Neil Labute and Nicolas Cage’s campy 2006 remake of The Wicker Man. Thankfully we have a very special guest star on hand to help navigate.

He enjoys graphic novels, dark beer and plays multiple sports (adequately, never exceptionally). While he loves all horror, if given a choice, Joe always opts for slashers and creature features.

“Life was a wheel, its only job was to turn, and it always came back to where it started.”

The Losers’ Club: A Stephen King Podcast heads to Frazier, New Hampshire to review Stephen King’s 2013 novel, Doctor Sleep. The sequel to 1977’s The Shining follows a much-older Danny Torrance, whose battle with alcoholism becomes all the more complicated when he crosses paths with a young child who also has the shine.

Join Losers Randall Colburn, Michael Roffman, and Dan Caffrey as they discuss the True Knot, dirty dishes with poundcake, and debate if King should have ever burned down The Overlook Hotel. Note: This episode was recorded in 2019 and is being re-released today as part of their ensuing chronological read-through.

Stream the discussion below and stay tuned next week for an episode on Bryan Fuller’s Carrie.
