[Podcasts] The Boo Crew and L.A.’s Natural History Museum Frighten Up the Season
As mortals, we have a strange fascination with the unknown, paranormal and mysterious, as well as creatures and monsters. Whether they come from lore or places like the sea, backwoods, tombs, ancient castles or urban legends, we are drawn to the darkness and to the heart of these tales and legends. Some of the best early stories were told cinematically on the silver screen by Universal Pictures with films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. They live on in our hearts as the roots of our love of horror movies that we not only grew up with but would also later inspire many great horror filmmakers and lead them into an era of a horror renaissance, much like we are experiencing today.
The Natural History Museum in the heart of Los Angeles, CA will open its newest and darkest exhibit ever – Natural History of Horror on October 10, 2019. The exhibit will focus on The Science of Scary – featuring scientific experiments and discovery that inspired the famous movie monsters. The Horror collection will feature props from early Universal horror movies, mainly focusing on Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon. Some of the props on display have been on loan to other museums over the years and displayed as a small collection of the treasures that were once donated by Universal many full moons ago – since the 1930s.
Some of the fascinating props on display will include the original bat from Dracula, the bandages worn by Boris Karloff in The Mummy and various props from Frankenstein. Along the way, you’ll discover 17 objects from the Natural History Museum’s collections and the four early Universal movie monsters. You’ll also get to explore the scientific inspiration for each of these classic monsters and get a glimpse of rare movie props, film footage, hands-on activities, and museum specimens.
The Natural History of Horror exhibit is Free with paid museum admission (Free for members) and will run from October 10, 2019 – April 19, 2020.
