The Dangers of Sex and Cruising in Gay Erotic Thriller ‘Stranger by the Lake’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

Published

on

Parking Lot.

What a sexy delight Erotic Thriller Month has been! We’ve tackled a diverse batch of films within the subgenre over the last four weeks, including Brian De Palma’s controversial classic Dressed to Kill, Paul Feig’s bisexual suburban noir A Simple Favor, and the Wachowski sisters’ sexy neo-noir Bound.

Have we saved the best for last? Well that would depend on how unsimulated you like your gay sex!

In writer/director Alain Guiraudie‘s French gay thriller, Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) frequently visits a nude beach, cruising for anonymous gay sex. He strikes up a friendship with outsider Henri (Patrick D’assumçao), but spends most of his time seeking out the enigmatic Michel (Christophe Paou).

When Franck stays late one evening, however, he sees Michel drown another man in the lake. Can he be sure what he saw or turn off his attraction to the sexy man with the moustache? Will Franck’s craving for love and sex be his doom?

Episode 249 – Stranger by the Lake (2013)

We’re wrapping up Erotic Thriller Month with the gayest text of all: French writer/director Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake (2013).

This is one of Joe’s favorite queer horror texts because it covers so many topics: cruising, sex and death, voyeurism, body image, gay microcosms, STIs, toxic relationship, homophobia, and gay friendships.

And that’s before we tackle the unsimulated sex, discuss using condoms for blowjobs, debate the ambiguous ending(s), and cringe over pervy Eric.

Plus: finding Franck frustrating, moustache inspirations, naturalistic lighting and sound, and why Henri is our favorite character.

Cross out Stranger by the Lake!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re celebrating 250 episodes with a late-90s classic in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow (1999).

P.S. Subscribe to our Patreon for nearly 265 hours of additional content! This month we’re discussing A Haunting in VeniceThe Nun 2, and two audio commentaries: one on Underworld and one on Saw II. Plus: a special episode on 2021’s The Voyeurs to coincide with all of the Erotic Thrillers on the Main Feed.

Joe is a TV addict with a background in Film Studies. He co-created TV/Film Fest blog QueerHorrorMovies and writes for Bloody Disgusting, Anatomy of a Scream, That Shelf, The Spool and Grim Magazine. He enjoys graphic novels, dark beer and plays multiple sports (adequately, never exceptionally). While he loves all horror, if given a choice, Joe always opts for slashers and creature features.
