‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’ – We’re Reimagining the Christmas Slasher Classic With a New Movie!
Forty years after parents picketed outside of theaters following the release of the initial Santa slasher movie in the franchise, we’re excited to announce today that Cineverse has acquired global rights to a new Silent Night, Deadly Night film. Deadline broke the news today.
Fresh off the release of Terrifier 3, Bloody Disgusting will be producing the upcoming reboot of the franchise that will be written and directed by Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn, V/H/S/85) and produced by Scott J. Schneid and Dennis Whitehead, executive producers of the original 1984 Tri-Star film, alongside Jamie R. Thompson.
Brandon Hill & Brad Miska (Terrifier 3) will oversee for Cineverse and will executive produce alongside Erick Opeka and Yolanda Macias.
In the original horror classic, Little Billy witnesses his parents getting killed by Santa after being warned by his senile grandpa that Santa punishes those who are naughty. Now Billy is 18 and out of the orphanage, and he has just become Santa himself.
When it was released in 1984, the first Silent Night, Deadly Night quickly became the most controversial movie of the year. In a series of letters, parents demanded the film be pulled from theaters. Tri-Star, the film’s original distributor, responded to all the outrage by doing just that – an act that would ensure SNDN’s place in the halls of horror film infamy.
In an instant, Silent Night, Deadly Night transformed from just another slasher film to a veritable cult classic, the very people who sought to banish it from existence serving to make it one of the most must-see horror films of the entire decade.
The new Silent Night, Deadly Night goes into production soon. It is currently slated for a late 2025 theatrical release.
“I have always been a huge fan of Silent Night, Deadly Night and can’t wait to bring Mike’s vision to fans of iconic slashers,” said Cineverse Executive Director of Acquisitions, Brandon Hill. “As we have seen this year, there continues to be incredible demand for independent horror films, and we believe this can deliver strong audiences from theatrical to home entertainment and streaming.”
Said Nelson, “The opportunity to work with producers involved with the original Silent Night, Deadly Night on this project – and to partner with the team responsible for releasing and marketing Terrifier 3 in such a creative and successful way (no pressure) – is an honor. I’m looking forward to getting production underway, and sharing my new take on this compelling story.”
The deal was negotiated by Brandon Hill on behalf of Cineverse and Kevin Mills, Esquire of Kaye & Mills, on behalf of Schneid and Whitehead and Wonderwheel Entertainment.

The film is “set in a world where survival is instinct, but humanity is a choice.
“Ridley Scott tells the story of Hig, a young pilot who, together with a military survivalist, Bangley, has carved out an efficient but isolated homestead in a brutal post-apocalyptic world until a mysterious radio transmission spurs Hig to venture into the unknown in search of the hope and humanity he still believes exists.”
Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, and Allison Janney also star.
The film is based on Peter Heller’s bestselling novel and written by Mark L. Smith (Overlord, The Revenant) and produced by Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss, Mark L. Smith, and Cliff Roberts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, which emphasize the thrills in the upcoming survival thriller. But it’s one that’s also filled with hope.
“I think people will be surprised and engaged, actually. I would say, hmm… charmed as well,” Scott says of the film. “Although, there is some violence.”
