Is “American Horror Story ?6” Going For a Classic Monster Theme?
FX’s “American Horror Story” is premiering its sixth season on September 14th and we STILL have no idea what the theme for the show is going to be. There are rumors that it’s going to be about the disappearance at Roanoke Colony, but FX CEO John Landgraf explained that when it comes to the teasers that have been released, “One is accurate; all the rest are misdirect.” He continued, “We decided, Ryan [Murphy] and I and [marketing president] Stephanie Gibbons, that it would be really fun this year… to keep it a mystery. There is a theme and a setting and a place and time, but we’re not going to reveal it,” per IndieWire.
While we can’t say with any certainty what the new theme is going to be, I was browsing around and found some curious images that raise the interesting possibility that they’re going to focus on classic movie monsters this year. For example, both the profile and header photos on the official AHS Facebook page have a vintage 50’s vibe emulating the sci-fi/horror films of that era. Additionally, the header shows an actress getting pulled into the water by what appears to be the Creature from the Black Lagoon/Swamp Thing. Furthermore, a newly released poster emulates The Mummy and a recent teaser takes direct inspiration from Dracula and Nosferatu.
Now, “American Horror Story” has never shy about wearing its inspirations on its sleeves. But this feels a bit too “on the nose”. Can you imagine if there were a darker, more mature version of The Monster Squad in action here?
Sarah Paulson joins Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Romika Annabell Osorio. We’re still waiting to hear if Angela Bassett, Denis O’Hare, Matt Bomer, Wes Bentley, Cheyenne Jackson or Finn Wittrock will return.

While I get that they’re all about generating intrigue and mystery prior to the September 14th premiere date, I personally think they’re going a bit overboard on the whole situation.

‘A Man in the Woods With an Axe’ – First Look at ’80s Throwback Slasher [Exclusive]
We have an exclusive first look at A Man in the Woods With an Axe, a blood-soaked, genre-twisting homage to 1980s slasher films.
Spanning four decades, A Man in the Woods With an Axe begins in the summer of 1987 before pushing into the modern era, weaving together timelines and perspectives in a way that builds both dread and intrigue.
Drawing inspiration from genre standouts like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Hatchet, and The Cabin in the Woods, the film blends visceral horror with moments of dark humor, creating a uniquely balanced experience that honors tradition while carving its own identity.
Writer-director Dillon Brown (Primal Darkness) aims to deliver everything fans crave from a slasher while boldly subverting expectations with a mid-film twist that redefines the story.
“This is an unapologetic love letter to the films that made me fall in love with horror,” Brown tells Bloody Disgusting. “But I didn’t just want to recreate that feeling; I wanted to challenge it. About halfway through, the film takes a turn that completely changes how you view not only this story, but the genre itself.”
Brown describes the vintage-inspired production as “far and away the bloodiest film I’ve ever made,” with practical effects helmed by Cody Ruch (The Mill, Pig Hill), an instructor at Tom Savini’s Special Make-Up Effects Program.
From Horror Dadz Productions, A Man in the Woods With an Axe is currently in production and targeting an early 2027 release.
