This morning a website by the name of Programming Insider posted that FX had renewed “American Horror Story” for two more seasons. Only, the article was quickly removed. Yet, the tweet remains as evidence.

According to the site, FX gave the greenlight for two more seasons, taking it through 2018-19, pushing it to a whopping 9 seasons.

FX has greenlight award-winning anthology “American Horror Story” for two additional seasons, taking it through 2018-19 (and at least nine seasons).

“American Horror Story launched the modern limited series revolution and – as evidenced by the most recent installment ‘Roanoke’ – it remains as vital today as when “Murder House” stunned audiences six years ago,” said John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions. “Each new chapter is a cultural event, beloved for every new twist in imagery, style, cast and plot. We are thrilled that Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and the entire creative team will continue to deliver the groundbreaking, celebrated “American Horror Story” for years to come.”

To-date, the “American Horror Story” franchise has won 15 Emmy Awards and dominates FX’s top-rated telecasts of all time. In persons, 18-34, for example, 12 of the Top 15 most-watched FX telecasts historically are from “American Horror Story.”

Update: it has been confirmed that Landgraf made the announcement Thursday morning from the biannual Television Critics Association press event.

Last year’s “My Roanoke Nightmare” was a wonderfully tight 10 episodes down from “Hotel’s” 12 and “Freak Show’s” 13. Prior to that we’ve had “Coven”, “Asylum” and “Murder House”, all of which allegedly live in the same universe and will eventually tie together.

The best part about engaging with collaborative genre fiction on the internet is that anyone can get in on the action, with worldwide accessibility often resulting in absurd story beats that wouldn’t be possible if any single person was responsible for the entire narrative. And while Kane Parsons’ Backrooms film is definitely the young filmmaker’s own unique take on the infamous creepypasta, it’s fun to see other creators join the Backrooms sandbox now that the big screen adaptation is getting ready for a record-shattering opening weekend.

As if cleverly timed releases like Puppet Combo’s The Backrooms game weren’t enough (not to mention that Scary Movie poster poking fun at Parsons’ flick), McDonald’s official social media accounts have now released an analog horror video of their own celebrating the liminal terrors of the McRooms – complete with a familiar purple surprise at the end of the footage.

While it’s funny enough to see the world’s most recognizable Fast Food giant engage with internet-borne Found Footage thrills seemingly out of the blue, the video is actually referencing a long-running gag among the Backrooms fandom where creators jokingly talk about there being a fully functional McDonald’s restaurant hidden somewhere in level 0 of the infamous liminal labyrinth.

Now, would it be too much to hope for a moist-carpet-flavored McShake to tie in with the film?

Backrooms is now playing only in theaters from A24.
