“The X-Files” returned to FOX with the first of ten new episodes just last night… but was the Season 11 premiere the beginning of the official end of the long-running series?
Creator Chris Carter has recently stated that the series *could* continue for many years to come, but that’s of course all dependent on how long stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny want to keep playing Scully and Mulder. And Anderson, according to recent comments, doesn’t have much interest in overstaying her welcome beyond this year’s new season.
If Anderson is truly out, then so too is Chris Carter, it seems. In a new chat with Collider, Carter expressed his lack of interest in continuing without her.
“For me, The X-Files is Mulder and Scully. I think if it were without Scully, I wouldn’t do it. That’s not my X-Files,” Carter told the site.
He added, “I’m always thinking that this could be it. I don’t know what the future holds. While I try to do my best, and we did well the last time out, this time out could be different. For me, The X-Files can go on, indefinitely. It’s really how long Mulder and Scully, and David [Duchovny] and Gillian [Anderson] want to do the show.”
Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO Gary Newman also commented this week.
“You could’ve asked Chris (Carter), David (Duchovny) and Gillian (Anderson) at various times since the show originally premiered whether they would do more. Some days you’d get a ‘Yes’, some days you’d get a ‘No’. I would not exclude the possibility that there would be more,” Newman said at TCA today. “But not only is there no plan, there hasn’t been a single conversation. It’s too early to even speculate.”
