Was That a Crypt Keeper Tribute Zombie on “The Walking Dead” Last Night?
Whenever makeup master Greg Nicotero directs an episode of “The Walking Dead,” you can expect a fun little “zombie tribute” to pop up at some point. In the past, Nicotero’s tribute zombies have paid homage to films like An American Werewolf in London and the work of George Romero, as well as RoboCop and even Lucio Fulci’s Zombie.
Nicotero directed last night’s mid-season premiere of “The Walking Dead,” and a zombie featured early on in the episode looked a whole lot like one of horror’s biggest icons.
We tend to wait until Nicotero himself confirms an homage before operating under the assumption that it is one, but we’ve got a strong feeling this was yet another intentional tribute on Nicotero’s part. In the first scene after the opening credits/first commercial break, Carol approaches a downed/trapped walker, sticking a knife into its brain.
The walker, well, he damn sure looked like our good pal The Crypt Keeper!
From the rotten off nose to the clouded eyes, and even down to the gnarly teeth and hole in his cheek, this zombie was a dead ringer for the host of HBO’s “Tales from the Crypt.”
This HAD to be intentional, right?!
A lonely Carrie White seeks friendship and answers in the first teaser for Carrie, a brand new adaptation of Stephen King’s classic story from horror master Mike Flanagan.
Along with the new teaser comes the announcement that the eight-episode limited series premieres on Prime Video on October 7.
The series follows misfit high‑schooler Carrie White (Summer H. Howell), who has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.
Carrie is written and executive produced by showrunner Mike Flanagan (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House) with Flanagan also directing four episodes. Stephen King also serves as executive producer.
Also starring in the series are Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Each of the show’s episodes will apparently open with the introduction of “a different, unique story of a different woman, somewhere else in the world and in time, coming to terms with their own abilities.” Flanagan teased, “Carrie’s specific place among that group of women is part of the real joy that we get to discover over the course of the season.”
Expect Flanagan to expand King’s story in unexpected ways, using a modern lens.
