You May Have Missed It, But “Castle Rock” Briefly Took Us Into Salem’s Lot This Week

Salem's Lot Remake 2022

Hulu’s “Castle Rock” isn’t a direct adaptation of any Stephen King stories but it is set within his own fictional world. Castle Rock is of course a town that pops up in many of King’s stories, part of his fictional Maine that also includes Derry, the primary setting of IT. Also in King’s Maine? Jerusalem’s Lot (aka Salem’s Lot), which first appeared in 1975’s Salem’s Lot.

If you blinked, you probably missed that “Castle Rock” visited Salem’s Lot this week!

In ‘Past Perfect,’ Henry Deaver puts son Wendell on a bus to get him out of Castle Rock, but Wendell ends up getting off at an earlier stop than his dad intended. That bus stop, if you pay very close attention to the scene, is located in Jerusalem’s Lot! A sign Wendell comes across near the stop indicates that Salem’s Lot is a mere 24 miles away from Castle Rock.

As established in the novel Salem’s Lot, the town has a history as bizarre and unsettling as Castle Rock’s. In the novel, vampire Kurt Barlow moves in and turns many of the townspeople.

Pretty cool to see “Castle Rock” establishing King’s Maine, if only in brief glimpses.

Other King works that have referenced the town of Salem’s Lot include The Shining, The Dead Zone, Pet Sematary, Dolores Claiborne and most recently, Doctor Sleep.

Joko Anwar’s “Nightmares and Daydreams” arrives globally on Netflix on June 14, 2024.

Netflix describes “Nightmares & Daydreams” as “a supernatural thriller series that shows there isn’t necessarily a rational explanation behind every occurrence.”

Here’s the full official synopsis: “A sci-fi supernatural series about ordinary people encountering strange phenomena that may be keys to the answer about the origin of our world and the imminent threat we will soon face. Characters and plots will intertwine like pieces of a puzzle. And the big picture will be awe-inspiring.”

The seven episode series presents a different story and a new set of actors in each installment, leading up to a big showdown in the finale.

Ario Bayu, Lukman Sardi, Yoga Pratama, Fachri Albar, Marissa Anita, and Sita Nursanti star.

The series was initially announced in 2022 by Deadline as part of a huge slate of Indonesian projects that included several new series and movies from renowned Indonesian filmmakers, including Joko Anwar. The outlet reported to expect “Nightmares & Daydreams” to follow multiple storylines that would see ordinary people encountering strange, eerie phenomena.

“Indonesia is so full of unique and extraordinary stories. I’m always excited to have the chance to bring these stories to a wider audience,” Anwar told Deadline at the time of the announcement.

“Nightmares & Daydreams” isn’t the only horror offering in the pipeline from Anwar; expect to hear more soon about Siksa Kubur (Grave Torture), an upcoming horror film written and directed by Joko Anwar from the production house Come and See Pictures. The film is a feature length adaptation of the 2012 short film, available to watch now on Anwar’s YouTube channel.
