Well over one year ago, Netflix and The Jim Henson Company announced that they were developing “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,“ a television series set to be a prequel to the 1982 film, The Dark Crystal. The 10-episode fantasy adventure series, they announced at the time, takes place many years before the events of the film, and it will star an ensemble of fantastical, state-of-the-art creatures created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop™ and Brian Froud, the original feature’s conceptual designer.
Via Bleeding Cool, Brian Henson just shared new details at Dragon Con over the weekend, revealing that filming on the series actually began almost one year ago!
“It’s been shooting since last November — it’s so cool that Netflix could get behind it in such a big way so that we can do it RIGHT,” Henson told the crowd. “I say we, but I’ve been doing Happytime Murders, so it’s really my sister’s [Lisa Henson] and Halle Stanford‘s project. They’ve really put together a great, great time in London.”
He continued, “And I’ll be honest, I thought those days were gone. I thought by the ’80s, the idea of being able to walk into a stage and see an incredible fantasy world realized was just long gone because of CG and everything like that. But they’ve REALLY done it right. It’s GREAT. The workmanship is just stunning, the artistic quality is RIGHT THERE again; what I thought maybe was lost, it’s still there. They’ll be shooting for another few weeks, and then there will be a huge amount of post-production.”
Henson also re-confirmed that the series is set many years before the film.
“We’ve said it’s a prequel, and it’s not an immediate prequel, so it doesn’t end when the movie started,” he noted. “It takes place significantly earlier than when the movie took place.”
“Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.”
Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, The Incredible Hulk) will executive produce the series and direct. “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will be a Netflix original series produced by The Jim Henson Company and executive produced by Letterier, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Longtime Henson collaborator Rita Peruggi will serve as producer and Henson’s Blanca Lista will serve as a co-executive producer. Leading the writing are co-executive producers Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.
